The decision by President Macky Sall of Senegal not to seek reelection in Presidential elections scheduled for February 2024 will go a long way in addressing diffusing the socio-political tension that has characterized the West African nation, and calming hearts of Senegalese, the Catholic Laity in the country have said.

In a televised address Monday, July 3, President Sall ruled out seeking re-election in 2024, ending widespread speculation that he would run for a third term, BBC News reported.

“My decision, carefully considered... is not to run as a candidate in the upcoming election. Senegal is more than me, and is full of capable leaders for the country's development," the Senegalese President said.

In a statement dated Tuesday, July 4, the leadership of Senegal’s National Laity Council (CNL) describes President Sall’s decision as significant, and that it “will help to reduce socio-political tension and calm hearts and minds, so that we can continue to build a Senegal that stands upright and united.”

“President Macky Sall confirmed, once again, that our nation is not without men and women of values, capable of rekindling in every citizen the fire of dignity, hope and solidarity in truth,” CNL officials say.

They add, “This decision is all the more important and symbolic as it calls to mind a value that tends to be neglected: keeping one's word.”

CNL officials further thank and congratulate President Sall “for his respect for this sacred principle.”

They note that the President’s decision “reinforces Senegal's democratic leadership, particularly in Africa.”

Tension has been mounting in Senegal following speculations that President Sall intends to seek reelection in the 25 February 2024 presidential poll.

On June 2, Catholic Bishops in Senegal appealed for reason, restraint, and responsibility following violent protests in the country between riot police and supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko that resulted in the loss of at least nine lives.

In their July 4 statement signed by CNL President, Philippe Abraham Birane Tine, representatives of the Laity in Senegal encourage President Sall, “in keeping with this spirit of appeasement, to work towards free, transparent and inclusive elections.”

They also invite “all Senegalese, especially politicians, to remain united in promoting the cardinal values on which our beloved nation is founded: fraternity, dialogue, truth and solidarity.”

“May God's mercy, love and peace descend on Senegal from heaven,” CNL officials implore.
