The Diocese of Katsina-Ala in Nigeria is set to launch the Year of the Youth on the Feast of St. Jude Thaddeus, scheduled for October 28.

In his Pastoral letter addressed to Catholics in Parishes of the Diocese, Bishop Isaac Bundepuun Dugu provided pastoral orientations to guide the people of God under his pastoral care to mark the yearlong celebration.

“After prayerful consultation and due to our peculiar situation in Sankera, and considering the crucial need to admonish, encourage, celebrate and accompany the youth, the Treasure and the Now of the Church and society, do hereby, solemnly, declare the Year of the Youth for the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala,” Bishop Dugu said in the Tuesday, August 15 statement shared with ACI Africa.

He added, “The Year of the Youth shall commence from the 15th Day of August, 2023 to the 15th Day of August, 2024.”

“The Inaugural Mass of the Year of the Youth shall take place on the 28th Day of October, 2023 at St. Gerard Majella Cathedral, Katsina-Ala,” the Nigerian Bishop said about the event to be held under the theme “Youth: Agents of the Good News.”

According to Bishop Dugu, “This year-long special pastoral programme is dedicated to all young people in the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala without the distinction of tribe, religion, denomination, political or cultural affiliation and economic status.”

The Year of the Youth, the 52-year-old Bishop said, is to be championed by all Catholic youth groups in the Diocese, most especially, the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), the Young Catholic Students of Nigeria (YCSN), the Holy Childhood Association (HCA), the National Association of Catholic Corpers (NACC) and the Nigerian Fellowship of Catholic Students (NFCS) and all young people, who are members of other Church organizations and societies.

“The Year of the Youth is the prerogative of everyone in the diocese, the priests, religious and lay faithful, who in charity and with patience, should accompany, encourage and support all young people, providing them with the opportunities to live, to grow, to practice their faith and to maximize their potential,” Bishop Dugu said.

He implored, “We undertake this voyage of the Year of the Youth, relying on the maternal care of our Mother Assumed into heaven, the intercession of our Patron Saint, Gerard Majella and St. John Bosco, the Patron Saint of the Youth.”
