Archbishop José Manuel Imbamba of Angola’s Saurimo Archdiocese has challenged politicians in the Southern African nation to rethink their perception of politics.

Speaking at the start of the Second Ordinary Plenary Assembly of the Bishops' Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe (CEAST) on Wednesday, August 23, Archbishop Imbamba said, “I invite our politicians to rediscover the mystery, beauty and ethics of politics, making it a noble mission, a selfless service, for the good of the citizens, regardless of their party colors.”

The Angolan Archbishop who serves as the President of the two-nation Conference of Catholic Bishops cautioned against the focus on power, saying, “We must have the courage to make the flag of the homeland fly more than those of the political parties, which aim for power.”

“We must have the courage not to narrow down, reduce and condition the lives of citizens in political parties,” Archbishop Imbamba emphasized at the start of the August 23-28 Plenary Assembly that is bringing together representatives from the 20 Dioceses of CEAST to exam pastoral, social, economic and political issues in Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe.

He continued, “We must have the courage to demolish the ideological, cultural and axiological bases that do not generate or propagate the dignity of the human person, plural coexistence, social friendship, meritocracy and the consequent human, social, economic and cultural progress.”

“Angola specifically needs to wake up from the anesthetizing sleep of partisanship, fanatical parity militancy, the culture of flattery, intrigue, arrogance, verbal, physical, psychological and spiritual violence, insensitivity and lack of commitment to the good of all citizens,” the Archbishop further said at the start of the six-day CEAST Plenary Assembly.

He went on to recall the objectives of the Three Year Pastoral Plan, saying, “All the faithful and people of good will to redouble our efforts to create and promote initiatives, in the light of the documents of the Church's Magisterium, which will enable us to reap promising and worthy fruits.”

Focusing on family apostolate to children, the President of CEAST said, “The evangelization and catechesis commissions of the Pastoral Care of Children must selflessly and patiently continue their mission, in order to sow new evangelical and cultural seeds in families and society in general, and in this way, in addition to preventing the various evils that are committed against them on a daily basis, we will lay solid foundations of ethical virtues and authentic values.”

“Catholic schools play and will play a fundamental role. Only in this way, I believe, will we be able to have a future of progress and full realization, which we all long for,” Archbishop Imbamba said during his August 23 speech.

The 58-year-old Angolan Archbishop who started his Episcopal Ministry in December 2008 invited the people of God in Angola to “examine their conscience to help overcome the cyclical and unjustifiable problems that keep Angola short of participatory citizenship and integral development.”
