Members of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) have highlighted the success of a three-month program in Ghana involving boys.

In a Wednesday, October 4 report, SDB members speak about Don Bosco Boys Home in Ghana’s Sunyani Diocese, where beneficiaries were involved in the “Boys Home Friends of Nature” initiative from March to June 2023.

"This program helped youth develop skills in organic agriculture and educated them about the importance of respecting nature," SDB members say, adding that an agronomist trained the boys in organic farming.

With the knowledge gained from the training, SDB members say that the boys involved in the initiative planted tomatoes, zucchinis, and peppers, among other plants.

"The garden complements the other farm facilities, improving the self-sufficiency of the center with organic vegetables. It also promotes healthy nutrition for the boys," Salesians involved in the initiative share.

The beneficiaries were also taught about the water cycle by volunteers from the Salesian International Volunteering for Development (VIS), SDB members say.

They add, "VIS used theoretical and practical experiences, including a science lesson on the characteristics and the three states of water. The boys then took part in practical experiments to learn more about water and its importance."

In the October 4 report, the interim Director of the U.S. development arm of SDB, Salesian Missions, is quoted as saying, “Youth at Don Bosco Boys Home have been given a chance to engage in educational activities that focus on the environment.”

“The education provided goes beyond traditional classroom lectures and allows youth to better understand the environment and their place in it,” Fr. Timothy Ploch adds.

Fr. Ploch continues, “Many Salesian programs have launched projects to help youth understand their environmental impact and improve agriculture and other practices for greater sustainability.”
