Juba, 13 November, 2023 / 9:00 pm (ACI Africa).
Stephen Cardinal Ameyu Martin Mulla of South Sudan’s Catholic Archdiocese of Juba has urged the new Deacons he ordained on Saturday, November 11 to “sacrifice” for the ministry, and to be always ready to serve the people of God in the eastern central African country.
In his homily during the Diaconate ordination Mass at St Theresa Kator Cathedral of Juba Archdiocese, Cardinal Mulla told the Deacons to embrace their vocation with humility and serve the people of God with commitment, dedication, and without discrimination.
“This is a serious calling to you Deacons, this is a serious calling every day you wake up; it is a sacrifice,” the South Sudanese Cardinal said, and added, “You are here to sacrifice yourself not for yourself but for the people of God.”
“To be a Deacon is not to be a master of the house. You are a master of the table. To serve the people of God, you are not going to sit on the table; you are the one going to serve the table and you have to be humble because God has given us this office in order to look after those who are disadvantaged,” Cardinal Mulla said.
The Cardinal explained, “If we have lost the spirit of sacrifice; we are no longer going to be a Church. The Church has survived because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. He spilled the blood on the cross and that is what is important for us priests and for you deacons and to you the faithful.”
