There is need for the Nigerian government to plan for ways in which families can cope with life, providing for their day-to-day needs, a Catholic Bishop in the West African nation has said.

In his Keynote address during the National Annual General Meeting of the Church and Society Department of Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) on Tuesday, November 21, Bishop Luka Sylvester Gopep said, “Authorities should provide an enabling mechanism for family economic empowerment and self-reliance.”

The lack of such mechanism, Bishop Gopep said, destroys “family’s growth socially, morally, and economically and it cripples the country, as it is the case with our country Nigeria.”

He attributed the current difficulties in Africa’s most populous nation to poor government policies, bad leadership styles and corruption.

“Most people deeply want to provide for themselves and their families, to work, to use their skills, and to make their own decisions about their finances, their lives, and their futures,” the Auxiliary Bishop of Nigeria’s Minna Diocese added.

He continued, “Economic empowerment and self-reliance are inevitable to ensure development and to pave a way for cash flow and livelihood opportunities for people as well as building self-reliance and resilience.”

According to Bishop Gopep, “Economic empowerment should therefore involve providing people with the education, training, and skills that they need to find a job, earn an income, and become self-supporting.”

He went on to discourage the use of financial aid as a solution to the alleviation of the sufferings in the families in Nigeria, which has been attributed to the removal of subsidy, one of the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.

“Simply handing out financial aid to marginalized people or poor families will not help them out of their poverty situation and can create a dependence on aid,” the Nigerian Catholic Bishop, who started his Episcopal Ministry in February 2021 following his appointment in December 2020 said.

He added in reference to families in Nigeria, “Equipping them with the skills and resources they need to develop their own business will result in income generation and a greater standard of living.”

“The best place to build an everlasting economic empowerment and self-reliance is the family,” Bishop Gopep emphasized during his November 21 keynote address.

He explained, “Everything good comes from the family; also everything bad comes from a family. Make families good, make families strong and you will get a good and strong society.”
