Catholic Bishops in Africa have, under their collective forum of Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), added their voice to those of other Bishops in Eastern Africa and international leaders in expressing concerns about the violent conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.
The leadership of a Catholic refugee agency with operations in 56 countries worldwide is appealing for humanitarian access to Ethiopia’s Tigray region, which is experiencing violent conflict between the Federal government forces and the paramilitary in the Northern region of the Horn of Africa country.
Pope Francis says he is “following with concerns” the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia pitting the federal government against the local authorities of the country’s northernmost Tigray region.
Following tensions between Ethiopia’s Federal government and the leadership of Tigray Regional State, Catholic Bishops in the Horn of Africa nation have appealed to both parties to resolve their differences amicably, in a spirit of mutual “respect and trust.”
